PAT 4-Week Series Themes

PEPS offers a program for Parents of Adolescents and Teens (PAT) for caregivers of children aged 10 – 19 years. Participants can select between a four-week and nine-week program.

Below are samples of our 4-week series themes: Although some key topics will echo between groups, every group is made up of unique individuals and that shapes a unique and valuable discussion each time.


Understand the Science

Understand the Science: Connect with your Tween 
This foundational 4-week series guides caregivers of early adolescents (10 – 12 years) through conversations about the challenges and opportunities in parenting adolescents, how the pandemic has impacted adolescent development, and how to help kids cope with their stress while managing your own.  

Understand the Science: Connect with your Middle Schooler
Starting middle school can be a major milestone in the lives of many children and their parents. This 4-week series guides parents and caregivers of middle schoolers (11 – 14 years) through an exploration of topics, including adolescent brain development, effective communication, and mental health to help adults gain the confidence they need to support their adolescent’s healthy development.  

Understand the Science: Connect with your High Schooler 
This 4-week series guides parents and caregivers of high schoolers (15 – 19 years) through an exploration of topics, including adolescent brain development, effective communication, and mental health to help adults gain the confidence they need to support their teen’s healthy development.  


Parenting Tips

Parenting Tips: The Changing World of Your Tween
This 4-week series supports parents and caregivers of early adolescents (10 – 12 years) to understand the changing world around tweens, including the online world and the social world as well helping them deal with stress.

Parenting Tips: The Social World of Middle Schoolers
This 4-week series supports parents and caregivers of middle schoolers (11 – 14 years) to navigate the challenges of the world around them, including the online world, the social world, relationships and sex, substance abuse, and more.  

Parenting Tips: The Social World of High Schoolers
This 4-week series supports parents and caregivers of high schoolers (15 – 19 years) navigate the challenges of the world around them, including the online world, the social world, relationships and sex, substance use, and more. 

Communicating with your Adolescent 
This foundational 4-week series guides caregivers of middle and high school students (10 – 19 years) through an examination of common communication barriers and offers caregivers the skills and tools to communicate more effectively with their adolescents. The series covers a range of topics, including how the pandemic has impacted communication skills and talking to adolescents about stress.  


Raising Healthy Youth

Adolescent Stress and Health
This 4-week series supports parents of younger adolescents (10 – 14 years) in understanding adolescent brain development, the types of stress and coping mechanisms as well as the mental health of their teens.

Teen Mental Health
This 4-week series supports parents of older adolescents (15 – 19 years) in understanding adolescent  stress and mental health as well as talking to their teens about substance use and self harm topics.

Teens and Sex
This 4-week series helps parents and caregivers understand how to navigate discussions about sex and sexuality with their adolescents (10-19 years). Topics range from how to talk about sex and support your teen’s physical and social emotional changes, to peer pressure and parental monitoring.


Adolescent Identity Development

Understanding Adolescent Social, Gender, and Sexual Identity Development — Adolescence is a time when most young people begin to examine their identity, their place in the world, and who they want to become as adults. This 4-week series guides parents and caregivers of middle and high school students (10 – 19 years) through the common physical and social-emotional changes of adolescence and offers parents/caregivers tools to better understand and support their child as they navigate their exploration of identity. The series covers a range of topics, including gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic and racial identity development.  

Supporting your Adolescent’s Social Identity Development
This 4-week series examines a multitude of social aspects and stressors that are common to this developmental age and guides parents of adolescents (10 – 19 years) in supporting their child(ren) as they explore their social identity while navigating the changing social and online worlds around them.
