How to stay relevant as Grandparents

PEPS recognizes the vital role of grandparents in their children’s and grandchildren’s lives and offers opportunities for grandparents to come together for support, shared information, and learning.

As is true with parenting, grandparenting is far different today than it was a generation ago. Whether a grandparent lives nearby or across the country, most witness significant differences between how they raised their children and how their children are raising theirs.

Judy Russell (PhD), our event speaker, is a consultant, PEPS Advisor, and seasoned facilitator of PEPS Expectant Parent and Newborn Groups and a grandparent herself. She will give us a glimpse into what she hears from expectant and new parents about their relationship with their parents and will talk about the lessons she's learned from being a grandparent.

About our Speaker: Judy Russell, PhD

Moving with her husband to the PNW 3 years ago, Judy has worked in health care for over 40 years, with the majority spent as an administrator at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. “Whether a new or seasoned parent, the favorite part of my job has always been supporting families and their children as they move through their [hopsital] stays and back home.” To that end, she focused her research on the attributes of trust relationships between parents and nurses in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Recently, she has been a consultant to free and charitable clinics providing care to medically underserved and marginalized populations. Judy supports the organizations’ efforts to establish best practices in patient and family-centered care to meet the specific needs and concerns of the patient population.

Judy also serves as a PEPS Advisor and facilitator of Connecting the Expecting, Working Moms, and Newborn Groups. Volunteering with PEPS has been a great fit as she has had the opportunity to meet and support families before and during their parenting journey. Judy loves watching the connections that are forged between the parents and the confidence gained as they navigate parenthood.

Judy is married with two adult children and a grandparent to her daughter and son-in-law’s toddler boy and baby twins, who they adore. In her free time, she and her husband enjoy watching their grandchildren, gardening, traveling, and being with friends and family.
