Grandparent Happy Hours

Celebrate being a grandparent and connect with other involved and curious grandparents like you at our Happy Hours for Grandparents. The Happy Hour typically includes light hors d'oeuvres and wine; an opportunity to mingle with other grandparents and a discussion, guided by an expert facilitator, on a topic relevant to grandparents.

  • Happy Hour: Thursday, July 20, 5:30-7:30 pm
    Location:
Verity Credit Union, Northgate, 11027 Meridian Ave N, Suite 101, Seattle, WA 98133

Topic: "Responding to Children's Questions about Differences"

We live in an increasingly diverse world and children are naturally curious about differences.  They are aware of them from very young ages. How we as adults respond to their spoken and unspoken questions about differences directly impacts how they will think about these ideas.  This session will provide opportunities for discussion as well as strategies and resources to help children think and talk about their ideas and feelings about themselves, the differences and similarities among people, and about fairness and unfairness in people’s interactions with each other.

Facilitators:

  • Debbie LeeKeenan, Early Childhood Consultant and Lecturer, Co-author of ‘Leading Anti-bias Early Childhood Programs: A Guide for Change” and Grandparent to 2 grandchildren. Debbie was the director of the Eliot-Pearson Children’s School at Tufts University from 1996-2013 and a member of the early childhood faculty at Lesley University and the University of Massachusetts.
  • Terrill Chang, mostly-retired environmental engineer, parenting observer, and grandfather to 3:  one in college locally and two middle-schoolers in Ohio.

Grandparent Meet Ups

Grandparent Meet Ups are informal gatherings organized by grandparents and open to all grandparents. The goal is for grandparents to get to know other grandparents in their area and share the joys and challenges of grandparenting. Take advantage of this opportunity to connect with other grandparents.

Interested in hosting a monthly grandparent meet up? Contact events@peps.org if you are interested in 'hosting' one of these monthly Grandparent Meet Ups.  Hosting means that you determine the monthly meet up date and time; choose the place (coffee shop, restaurant, ...) where you would like to meet other grandparents; and be at that place during the day/time you've chosen. PEPS will do the PR!
