Program for Parents of Adolescents and Teens

PEPS has been fortunate to have supported thousands of new parents through their journey into parenthood and our organization may be uniquely poised to respond to a developing need at a different parenting stage.

Families have shared that their child’s transition to adolescence can feel overwhelming and they experience conflicting emotions about their child’s increasing autonomy. This is particularly acute in instances where it's the family’s first time parenting a teen. Other challenges expressed include dealing with feelings of grief on the loss of the previous relationship they knew with their child; struggles with keeping kids focused on academics; fears and insecurities as kids are exposed to or drawn to substance use and sexual behavior, gender identity and sexuality, and social media; increasing isolation, depression, and anxiety among kids; a sense of their own isolation; and feelings of blame and shame among parents themselves.

PEPS is excited to embrace the opportunity and responsibility to support families with adolescents and teens. Through generous grants from two local funders, King County Best Starts for Kids and The Jolene McCaw Foundation, PEPS will be introducing a unique pilot program!

Parents will be able to participate in a free six-week program that will include time to share highs and lows, as well as feature topics for discussion each week. Each meeting will be led by a Group Leader with a background in adolescent development and psychology, trained in group facilitation.

In this pilot, our organization will be using the program to learn and adapt, as we strive to make this an ongoing series, and enhance the curriculum continuously. Be sure to participate in the pre- and post-program surveys to share your feedback and help this program grow!
