Little Peppers Assistant

Background

Little Peppers is a PEPS peer support group for parents of families with two children under the age of three (typically a baby 0 – 6 months; and a toddler 3 or under.) The groups consist of 5-8 families and meet for 90-minute sessions, weekly for 11 weeks. Each Little Peppers group has an assistant and trained facilitator who is responsible for planning and guiding the meeting, by leading the parents in sharing highs and lows, a topic discussion, and lead songs and games for the children during a portion of the meeting.

Summary

Little Peppers Assistant attends and assists Leader during Little Peppers group meetings; engages toddlers, ages 1 – 3 years old, with activities throughout the duration of the meeting, while moms attend the meeting. This is a great position for a student who wants more experience working with children and who would benefit from exposure to the PEPS peer-support model for new parents.

Scope of Work

  • Managing toddlers and ensure a safe environment. This includes resolving inappropriate behaviors – fighting, etc.
  • Informing parents of child(ren)’s behavior or needs - being unsafe, has a bathroom accident or needs a diaper change, etc.
  • Engaging toddlers in singing songs, playing simple games, reading stories, or otherwise keeping them occupied while parents participate in facilitated meeting.
  • Gently encouraging toddlers to stay with the other toddlers, but allowing them to visit with parent, if necessary.
  • Participating in song time with Leader and toddlers or tidying things up around the room.
  • Helping to keep the group, as a whole, happy and focused.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before the meeting begins, and to stay for 15 minutes after to help with set up and clean up.

Parents are ultimately responsible for their children’s needs during the meeting (feeding, diapering, discipline, etc.). The facilitator, assistant, and group participants all remain in the same room throughout the session.
